TexAnn volleyball dominates on the road

The Tarleton State University TexAnn volleyball team went on the road this past weekend and earned wins on both games. The TexAnns faced the St. Edward’s University Rattlers on Friday Oct. 2 and the Texas A&M University-Kingsville Javelinas on Saturday Oct. 3.The TexAnns managed a 3-0 sweep over St. Edward’s at the Recreation and Convocation Center in Austin, Texas and pulled out a 3-1 victory against the Javelinas at the Steinke Center in Kingsville.

The first set started out with a 6-0 run. Kenya Alexander, Hailey Roberts, and Meg Umbel made sure to set the bar high early in the game with each of them getting kills.

After that 6-0 run, the two teams went back and forth for the next 19 points, but the TexAnns were able to get their lead to 15-9. Tarleton then went on a 10-6 run to finish out the first set.

Roberts started out the second set with back-to-back kills. Tarleton started out the second set on an 11-3 run. St. Edward’s was only able to get within six points of the TexAnns before Tarleton finished out the game with a strong 25-14 victory.

St. Edward’s was able to take it’s first lead of the match by scoring the first point of the third set and was able to get a 3-4 lead over the TexAnns, but a kill from Roberts and one from Kelsey Raglin gave the TexAnns the momentum they needed. The TexAnns won the final set 25-15.

Roberts led the game with 18 kills, Mathis had seven, and Alexander had six. Chandler Gow led in assists with 32, and Ayssa Garcia earned 21 digs.

Tarleton was able to get a 6-1 lead in the opening match with two kills by Roberts and four attack errors by Kingsville. They were able to keep their lead until it was tied at 22 all and Kingsville won the set at 24-26.

The TexAnns were not going down easy and managed to get a 9-4 lead over the Javelinas with kills from Umbel, Macie Walker, and two aces from Roberts.

Kingsville was able to tie the game at 21, but Alexander fired in a kill that started a 4-1 TexAnn lead and giving them a 25-22 win for the second set.

Kingsville took a 3-5 lead during the third set, but a kill from Umbel pumped up the TexAnns and started out a 5-0 run for the ladies. Kills by Raglin and Mathis gave the TexAnns their biggest lead of the set at 23-14, and Alexander finished out the set with two kills, making the final score 25-20.

Alexander led the team with 13 kills and also had three blocks. Raglin had nine kills, 12 digs, and four blocks. Umbel had nine kills and led the team with seven blocks.

The TexAnns’ two wins over the weekend make the TexAnns 4-1 in Lone Star Conference play and a 14-3 overall record and are currently tied for second place with Cameron University.

The TexAnns, after a six day break, return to LSC action on Friday Oct. 9 when they host the Cameron Aggies to take the second place spot in Wisdom Gym at 6 p.m.
