Carrigan accepts first ever head coach position with UTPB

Carrigan addresses UTPB upon accepting the head coach position.

Tarleton State University’s Assistant Football Coach and Offensive Coordinator Justin Carrigan recently accepted a new position with University of Texas of the Permian Basin.

“Being offered an opportunity to become a head coach and develop a program through my values and beliefs was something I couldn’t pass up,” commented Carrigan on his departure from Tarleton.

Carrigan was first the quarterback coach and passing-game coordinator when he arrived at Tarleton in 2010. He then switched to the wide receiver coach in 2011. Carrigan has been the offensive coordinator (OC) since the 2012 season.

During the 2013 season, Carrigan’s offense totaled 4,708 yards, 3,161 of which were by passing game. Tarleton was able to total more than 9,300 yards on offense during Carrigan’s two seasons as OC.

With Carrigan as the head quarterback coach, Tarleton’s quarterbacks were able to complete 521 of 845 passes. 45 touchdowns and only 27 interceptions were also accomplished.

Carrigan is serving as the first ever head coach for the Falcon’s. During his first year at UTPB, Carrigan plans to build a foundation for the new team and the new program.

“We will be designing and building all new facilities while only practicing with our new team,” said Carrigan. “We do not plan to compete until the 2016 season.”

Before coaching at Tarleton, Carrigan served as the wide receiver coach, passing game coordinator, and the strength and conditioning coach at Midwestern State University. He also coached at the University of El Paso and held the title of Office Quality Control.

Carrigan attended college at Angelo State University where he also played football for the Rams.

“It is with great sadness that my family and I are leaving Stephenville and Tarleton State University, but we are extremely excited about the opportunity ahead of us,” Carrigan said. “This was home for us for the past five years and we have made some life-long friendships here. It has been a tremendous honor to be associated with the Purple Poo, Plowboys, The Sound and The Fury, TexAnns and Texans. Good-bye for now, but we will meet again on the gridiron in 2016.”
