Recap: Yell Contest 2014

Last night, Tarleton State University packed Wisdom Gym to watch 11 Greek organizations face off for Yell Contest 2014.

Every group came dressed to win after weeks of practice and rehearsal. Teams were divided into small and large division based on size. Small division included Delta Chi, Lambda Chi Alpha, Sigma Chi, FarmHouse, Alpha Gamma Rho and Sigma Phi Lambda. Large division was made up of Kappa Delta Rho, Delta Zeta, Delta Phi Epsilon, Phi Mu and Alpha Gamma Delta.

Teams were judged on use of tradition in yells, originality, clarity of words, unity as a team and loudness. Each team is given five minutes from the moment they step onto the mat, until the entire team steps off.

Small division brought spirit and tradition with every cheer and got the crowd going with some great yells. Teams yelled cheers to the tunes of popular pop songs, some country and even threw it back to the 50’s with a “Grease” themed performance from returning champions FarmHouse. The teams’ dance moves made the crowd cheer and laugh as they were reminded of all the Tarleton legends and traditions.

The large division brought just as much spirit and intensity and kept the excitement going. Themes like Spice Squirrels and All American were used in telling Tarleton’s history. Returning large division champions Delta Phi Epsilon presented a 90’s themed yell.

First place in small division went to FarmHouse, for the second year in a row. Delta Zeta took the win for large division with their patriotic performance.

At the conclusion of the competition, Tarleton President Dr. F. Dominic Dottavio and the Plowboys began the beating of the drum. The drum was then carried out to the amphitheater where the winners had their turn to beat it as well. The drum beating will continue 24 hours a day until kickoff of the homecoming game this Saturday night.
