TexAnns dominate in sweep over ENMU Saturday

The Tarleton State University TexAnn softball team is on a four-game winning streak after sweeping Eastern New Mexico Saturday 7-3 and 2-1. Randi Fentress and Brenna Hennan led the two wins with a pair of complete-game victories.

In the first game of the series, the TexAnns were down by three in the first inning, after an RBI-double to left and an RBI squeeze bunt to get the third run. Fentress followed the runs with a looking strikeout to end the inning.

In the second inning, Amber Clifford plated Erika Menchaca and Randi Fentress on a 2-out, 2-RBI single up the middle to get some runs on the board for Tarleton.

In the third inning, the TexAnns took the lead after Fentress had an RBI single and the Zias recorded an error that allowed two more TexAnn runs.

Tarleton got another run in the fourth on a passed ball, and Clifford had an RBI single in the fifth to bring the score to 7-3.

The TexAnns recorded nine hits, with Clifford and Katelyn Conlee having multiple hits and the others coming from Melody Mayse, Mikayla Stogsdill, Taylor Wells, Menchaca and Fentress.

Fentress recorded the win evening out her record at 8-8, and finished her 15th complete game of the season. She allowed three runs, two earned on three hits, and two walks with six strikeouts. Fentress also passed over the 500 career innings pitched mark with 501.1 career innings, and also topped the 400-strikeout mark with 401.

In the second game on Saturday, Brenna Hennan allowed only one run in seven innings, with the TexAnns beating ENMU 2-1.

In the bottom of the second, the TexAnns were the first team to get a run after Conlee scored on a passed ball.

Hennan didn’t allow a run until the fourth inning, after an RBI double down the left field line put the Zias on the board.

In the fifth inning, Wells had an RBI double down the left field line bringing home Mayse to put them ahead 2-1 where they would stay.

Hennan also evened her record on Saturday, allowing one run on three hits, two walks and a strikeout in seven innings.

Wells recorded two of the TexAnns’ five hits, while Mayse, Conlee and Kendra Mendoza had the rest.

Conlee led Tarleton’s offense with a .667 average and four RBIs. Also during the weekend, Wells (.583), Fentress (.500), Stogsdill (.44) and Mendoza (.417) all hit over .400, and as a team the TexAnns hit .387 and held the Zias to just a .215 batting average.

Next weekend, the TexAnns will be travelling to Canyon for a four-game series against the No. 1 ranked Lady Buffs beginning Friday at 5 p.m.
