Tarleton sports thrive despite unconventional season beginning

Tarleton State University sports are playing non-stop. There have been many games from almost every sport.
Tarleton baseball kicked off their season on Saturday, Feb. 20, in Abilene, Texas vs. Abilene Christian University. This first inning of game one was a scoreless one and was followed by ACU getting two runs in at the end of inning two, leaving the score 2-0, ACU. ACU dominated inning three with six runs and Tarleton State getting one run, leaving the score 6-1 for inning three. In inning four, ACU got two more runs, making the score 10-1, with ACU in lead so far. In inning five, the Texans scored two runs and ACU only scored one. Bringing the score 11-3, with ACU in the lead. Inning six ended with ACU scoring five and Tarleton scoring zero, which resulted in ACU winning with a final score of 16-3. Although Tarleton lost, history was still made, Cody Vannoy made history by becoming the first Texan to hit a home run in Division 1 history. Game two resulted in another loss with a score of 2-7, ACU. The following day, Tarleton State played ACU again in Stephenville, TX. Making this the first win of the spring season with a score of 10-4. Days later, Tarleton state played at Globe Life Field in Arlington, TX vs. UT Arlington. This game also resulted in a loss with a score of 1-14.
Men’s Basketball started their Division 1 season back in November 2020. Since they have played 16 games, seven of those being home and nine being away. They have won seven games. On Feb. 19, The Texans played Dixie State in Burns Area in St. George, Utah. Tarleton dominated in both halves of the game, leaving the first half with a score of 36-23, and scoring an additional 41 points in the second half to get them to a win. The Texans won with a score of 77-59. They played Dixie state again the next day, although they lost that game with a score of 48-64.
Women’s Basketball also started their season, in November, they have played 19 games, six of those being home and 11 of those being away. They have won seven games. On Feb. 13 and 14, the team played Chicago State in Chicago, IL at Jones Convocation Center. The Texans left Chicago with two wins. The first game was finished with a final score of 64-56 and the second game was a final score of 61-41. The Texans most recent home game was Feb. 21, at Wisdom Gym vs. UNT Dallas. They continued their winning streak with a score of 71-46.
The Tarleton Women’s Golf team kicked off its season on Feb. 22, in the Islander Classic in Corpus Cristi. Women’s Golf finished in the top 10, receiving a score of 975. Women’s Golf received an overall of 116 pars and 18 birdies. They were ultimately placed sixth in par 3 scoring and also placed sixth in par 5 scoring. They received an average score of 3.35.
Women’s Softball started their spring Division 1 season on Feb. 20, against Wichita State. So far, they have played seven Division 1 games, one of those was home and one of those was away and five of those were neutral locations. They have won one game vs. Prairie View A&M. The Texan Softball team has been on the move since they started their season, they have played schools such as Lamar, Oklahoma State, University of Oklahoma and many more. On Feb. 24, the Texans played against Prairie View A&M, leaving them with their first win of the season, 7-3. In the first inning, Tarleton had two runs leaving them with a score of 2-0, they then in inning two, scored another point (3-0.) In inning three, the Texans were able to score three more points, driving their overall score top 6-2. They received their last point of the game in inning five to give them their final score.
The Women’s Tennis team started their season in January and has since played eight games. Six of those were away, one on neutral ground, and one on the home front. On Feb. 24, the tennis team won their first home game vs. Dallas Baptist after three games in a row being canceled from the Texas snowstorm.
Last but certainly not least, the Tarleton Volleyball team kicked their Division 1 season off with a win on Jan. 22 against Louisiana Tech. The volleyball team has since played 12 games, six of those being home, five being away, and one being neutral. The volleyball team has won five games so far. Their most recent home games were on Feb. 19 and 20 against Utah Valley. Their first game against Utah Valley was a 1-3 loss for the Texans but the following day was a 3-1 win for the Texans.
