Tarleton football season recap
The Tarleton State football team completed their second Division 1 season this past year. The Texans managed to finish the season with a record of 6-5. The Texans played teams from all over the country and had a 5-1 record at home.
Family weekend occurred on Sep. 11, and Texan football matched up against Fort Lewis. They put on a show for all of the Texan families and claimed a victory over Fort Lewis 54-7. Four of the Texans ran for 50 plus yards, three of those four being running backs. Daniel Wright had 115 yards off of 14 carries in his breakout performance to lead the Texans. Jayy McDonald also had a fantastic performance with 92 yards from 10 carries, and two touchdowns to top it off. Ryheem Skinner gained an honorable mention with 50 yards and a touchdown. All of these yards led to the Texans rolling over Fort Lewis in this big win.
The homecoming game on Oct. 23 proved to be another great performance by the Texan football team when they played Midwestern State. The game was a battle, as the Texans fought to win 17-14. The game set an attendance record at 16,216 fans. Junior tight end Max Maxfield scored both of the touchdowns for Tarleton State University on catches from quarterback Steven Duncan. Defensive back Devin Hafford had two interceptions to help the Texans out as well.
By the end of the season, several of the Texans had put up very impressive numbers. The top receiving yards was accomplished by Wide Receiver Tariq Bitson with 721 yards in the season. Running back Jayy McDonald led the team with 680 rushing yards. On defense, DJ Harris led the Texans with 58 tackles, and on the Defensive Line, Sean Walton led his team with five sacks, and 9.5 yards on a tackle for loss. Overall, the Texans put up impressive numbers across the board.
Following the season, several Texans were declared for the NFL draft including : DB Devin Hafford, WR Tariq Bitson, RB Jayy McDonald, LB Ronnell Wilson, DB Benjie Franklin, and DB Tre Johnson.
The Texan football team will open their 2022 season on Sep. 1 in a home matchup against Mississippi Valley State. More to come on Tarleton football when the season begins.
