Cody Canada has been a very big staple in the Red Dirt Country music industry for the last 12 years. Being a founding member of the very popular band, Cross Canadian Ragweed, Canada started playing the guitar and loving country music at the young age of five years old. Canada’s first taste of country music was listening to George Strait at a dinner theatre in 1981.

After seeing Strait that night, Canada decided that he was going to be a country music singer. “I realized that night ‘this is what I want to do one day’,” Canada said. Around the age of ten, Canada began to get serious about playing the guitar, and started to learn more about it. Cross Canadian Ragweed was formed when Canada was only 17 years old, and were playing for the young bar crowds in their early days.

In 2011, Canada formed his current band Cody Canada and the Departed and has been playing with the band ever since. The Departed will be performing in multiple festivals in the next few weeks, including The 28th Annual Larry Joe Taylor Fest, and the Boom Town Jam for the grand opening of the newly renovated and restored Lone Star Theatre Bar.

When asked what his future plans were, Canada said, “I like to put out a new album every year. This year, I’ll be taking a break from writing to help my friend Jeremy Plato with his new album that he is putting out.” Being a friend of the late Merle Haggard, Canada said that his next album would definitely have to do with a tribute to Haggard. “We will make it count for Merle. It will be at the right time, and we will do it the right way for him.”
