Euphemia “Eve” Edem is a senior kinesiology major at Tarleton State University. She calls Nigeria home and was recently selected for All-American Honors for indoor track and field, along with Lone Star Conference Field Athlete of the Week for the third straight week

What made you decide to come run at Tarleton?

Euphemia Edem (EE): I came to Tarleton to run track. I believe in making history wherever I go. I don’t really believe in being better only in a big school, anyone can be better no matter what school they attend.

What events do you compete in?

EE: I compete in long jump and triple jump.

What do you consider your biggest accomplishment?

EE: My greatest accomplishment is God giving me the talent that leads me to acquire a good education. I am looking forward to making it in the upcoming 2016 Olympics in Brazil and keep going from there with God giving the strength and ability.

How did it feel to earn All-American Honors?

EE: Being All-American in both long and triple jump again this year is a great feeling any college athlete wishes for. Although the distance in the triple jump was not what I expected, getting on that podium with a trophy in my hand is almost a feeling like receiving the greatest gift you ever wanted from your parents.

What is your favorite event and why?

EE: I won’t say I have any favorite. They are both hard to train for, but the coaches I have been opportune to work with. They always tell me I’m better in the triple jump than in the long jump, but I love them both.

If you could compete in any other track and field event, what would it be?

EE: high jump

How difficult was the transition to a new country and what surprised you most during your transition?

EE: The transition to a new country was difficult but the only good thing is that I adapted fast. When I first arrived, it was the culture that was very different. The way English is being spoken and written here is so different.

How often are you able to go home and see your family and friends?

EE: I have not been able to go home since I have been to the United States, but hopefully I will be going soon.

What do you plan to do after graduation?

EE: After graduation, I plan to further my education, but still keep competing as an athlete.
