On March 1, the Tarleton State University men’s basketball team defeated Texas A&M University–Commerce in Wisdom Gym to become the Lone Star Conference champions. The Texans defeated the Lions 68-48 with a leading performance from Mo Lee on senior night. The guard was able to score 26 points during his final home game.

Tarleton was able to keep the Lions from taking a lead in the first half until the 13:40 mark when TAMUC was able to get two points ahead of the Texans – their only lead of the half.

Tarleton was able to get their biggest lead of the first half (13 points) right at the buzzer. Lee managed to score a 3-pointer at the same time the buzzer signified the break in the game.

Davene Carter started out the scoring in the second half with a dunk to make the score 34-19. TAMUC made several attempts to close the scoring gap, but was unsuccessful. They were able to get within 14 points of the Texans, but Michael Hardge crushed the Lions’ hopes with a free throw to take the lead back to 15.

A 24 point lead (68-44) was the biggest gap in the scoring during the game at the 1:55 mark.

The final buzzer sounded followed by the scream of a crowded Wisdom Gym. The scoreboard read 68-48, Texans – and Tarleton had won the title of LSC champion.

Other Texans that contributed to the team’s total score were Malcolm Hamilton with 13, Hardge with 8, Carter and Damion Clemons with six each, Nosa Ebomwonyi with four and EJ Reed with two.

The Texans were 40.4% for field goals, while the Lions were only 31.3%. Tarleton was also 67.6% from the free throw line.

The Texans next game will be in Allen at the Allen Event Center. The team has secured the No. 1 spot in the LSC Championship Tournament and will face Eastern New Mexico State University at 8:30 p.m. on March 4.
