On Monday, Sept. 1, Tarleton State University lost one of its own in a terrible accident on U.S. Hwy 281. Sade Lowery, from Frisco, Texas, was twenty years old and had just started her third year as a music major at Tarleton. Lowery was a member of The Sound and the Fury band, a member of the Tarleton Wind Ensemble and a part of the group who played at Carnegie Hall in New York City this past spring, as well as an active member of the music sorority Tau Beta Sigma.

Lowery was beloved by everyone that she came into contact with. Fellow bandmate and friend Shea McKinnerny said, “Many people say she could light up a room, but she definitely did more than that. Whether we were on the practice field, at a football game, or on the plane to New York, Sade’s presence was known. She is a strong and perfect example of the quote, ‘When words fail, music speaks’.”

Lowery always had a smile on her face and said “Hello” to everyone that she passed in the halls.

“Her nickname in Tau Beta Sigma was Black Diamond and she loved playing Dance Dance Revolution on the Wii,” shared friend Channing Parker.

Melissa Furber, another close friend of Lowery’s, said, “She had a big heart and made sure everyone was happy. You never saw her upset because she never wanted to be a burden to other people.”

Lowery was an amazing person, and the news of the loss of her life strongly affected many people in the Tarleton music department. She will always be remembered by the people who knew and loved her very much.

A memorial service will be held in Lowery’s honor on Friday, Sept. 5 in Dallas, Texas at the Lincoln Funeral Home. The funeral will be on Saturday, Sept. 6 in Dallas, Texas at Good Street Baptist Church.
