Tonight, Tarleton State University theatre will be presenting Sophocles’ class play, “Oedipus Tyrannos”.

The stage is set as the Palace of Oedipus with huge windows and a sliding door that is set to go up and down. The music is eerie with sounds of crows and screeching. As you walk into the theatre, you may encounter a few outcasts in the audience before the play even starts. Don’t be alarmed; they’re just there to add to the atmosphere of this twisted, intense show.

“Oedipus Tyrannos” is a play about a Greek king who unknowingly plays into the hands of fate when he fulfills a terrible prophecy. As his own flaws and faults escalate to his demise, a shocking revelation shakes the king, and his kingdom, to their core.

This was an exciting play to watch as Brayden Doty put on an outstanding performance as the lead role. The lighting effects make the show dramatic and eye catching to the audience. A classic Greek chorus adds its own sound effects of stomping on the wooden floors and chanting to transition between scenes.

A gory, yet sentimental, final act will leave audiences (at least, those unfamiliar with the play) breathless and undoubtedly horrified.

The show opens tonight at 7:30 p.m. and runs until Saturday, Sept. 27. Tickets are $5 for Tarleton students with ID and $10 for adults. The play is intended for adult audiences. The box office can be reached at (254) 968-9634.
