The Tarleton State University Student Government Association hopes that in the near future, graduating seniors may no longer be handed an empty diploma portfolio after walking across the stage during their commencement ceremony.

Ryan Eaton, SGA Senior Class Senator, researched this issue and decided to bring a resolution before the SGA because he wanted to do something that would benefit the entire student body some day, not just his senior class.

“When I went to research this problem at Tarleton, I contacted the Registrars office and was told that the main issue was that they were too understaffed to complete this goal, which is [a goal] already set by the Registrars office… The solution seemed to be, that clearly, more staff should be added to help get these diplomas approved before graduation,” Eaton said.

This resolution passed unanimously within the Student Senate and also passed through the House, although with conflict. The main issue raised was that since there would be more pressure, there could be mistakes made when approving the diplomas.

“If the administration thought that mistakes would be made, they would not allot for the extra staff,” Eaton responded.

Eaton concluded by explaining that while this isn’t a pressing issue, he thinks “it would be awesome to go to graduation and open up the cover to see my diploma on that day.”

After passing through both chambers of the legislative branch, the resolution will now be turned over to the administration.
