TexAnn basketball suffers loss in final season game

The Tarleton State University women’s basketball team took a road trip to Commerce, Texas on Saturday, March 1 to play their final regular season game before the Lone Star Conference Tournament this coming week.

The TexAnns went into the half trailing by 17 points, and were unable to make a comeback. Texas A&M – Commerce overpowered the TexAnns 69-74.

Tarleton came into the game trailing the entire first half. The Lions started out with a 3-pointer and never looked back.

The TexAnns were able to get within five points of the Lions in the beginning of the first half. Two jumpers from Kathy Thomas and a free throw by Kiara Wright made it a four-point game with 10:51 left in the first half.

Commerce went on an 11-2 run with 4:55 until the half and made the score 30-18 in their favor. At the half, it was Commerce 40, Tarleton 28.

After the half, Commerce was able to keep their double-figure lead and increase it to 17 (62-45) with 7:59 left to play.

A 12-2 Tarleton run was triggered by Wright and decreased the deficit to seven (64-57) with 4:28 on the clock. At the final minute of the game, Thomas hit a 3-pointer with 21 seconds left.

It wasn’t enough, though, and the TexAnns returned home with a final regular season record of 19-7 overall, and 10-6 in LSC play.

Wright led the game with her 56th career double-double with 22 points and 17 rebounds. Shanae Lowrance had her first double-double of the season with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas also added double figures with 11 points.

Brianna Bledsoe and Raven McGrath each added eight, and Travanti Downes and Ikpeaku Iwobi had four. Keyra Johnson added two to finish out the TexAnn scoring.

However, the TexAnns have locked in the No. 2 seed in the upcoming LSC Tournament. The team will open the tournament with a rematch against Commerce on Wednesday, March 5 at the Allen Event Center in Allen, Texas.
