Tarleton State University’s athletes racked in high honors during LSC postseason awards banquet this Tuesday.
Senior Guard, Chuck Guy was named the Lone Star Conference Player of the Year, the award announcement came at a pre-championship banquet in Allen, Texas, where the LSC Basketball Championship tournament was held.
Guy became the fourth Tarleton player to earn POY honors and the first since David Stephens won the honor in 2005.
In addition to being named POY, Guy was named to the All-LSC First Team after leading the conference in assists (6.0) and ranking sixth in scoring (16.1 ppg). Guy shot 41.1 percent from the field and led the league with 140 free throws made on the season.
More impressively, Guy tallied a league-high 151 assists and turned the ball over just 43 times to lead the LSC with a +3.5 assist-to-turnover ratio. He ranks in the top 10 in steals, free throw percentage, and three-point field goals on the season as well.
Head coach Lonn Reisman was tabbed the league’s Coach of the Year to highlight the LSC men’s basketball postseason awards that were announced Tuesday evening.
For Reisman, this marks his fifth COY selection and second in the past three seasons.
Joining Guy on the All-LSC First Team was De’Andre Upchurch, who finished the season ranked third in the league with 16.4 ppg overall and a league-best 18.1 ppg in conference games.
Upchurch sank 74 three-pointers on the season and shot 45.4 percent from the field, while finishing second in the league with an 87.6 percent effort from the charity stripe.
Tarleton’s Jakob Damstra was named to the All-LSC All-Academic team for his efforts both on the court and in the classroom.
Tarleton’s Tashawn Mabry was named an All-LSC Honorable Mention selection after scoring 11.2 points and 3.2 boards per game. The junior-transfer knocked down 34 three-pointers and led the Texans with a 46.6 percent effort from beyond the arc.
New to the awards ceremony this year, the LSC announced its all-defensive team on Tuesday as well. Tarleton’s Davene Carter was one of five players named to the LSC All-Defensive team. Carter led the Texans with 5.9 rebounds per game and he tallied 23 blocks as well.
Highlighted by senior All-American Kiara Wright, Tarleton State had four TexAnns recognized among the best in the Lone Star Conference. Wright earned a pair of individual superlatives while Kathy Thomas, Brianna Bledsoe and Shanae Lowrance also earned accolades.
For the second consecutive season, Wright was named the LSC Player of the Year making her the first player to win consecutive awards since 2006-09. Wright is the first athlete to win the Player of the Year award in consecutive seasons without divisions since Jennifer Clarkson (ACU; 1995-96).
“The impact she’s had at Tarleton and in our conference was recognized tonight. When the other coaches are the one’s voting for things like this, it is basically saying, ‘I hate playing against this person.’ To know what she brings to the game and for the coaches to have such a high opinion of her is impressive,” said assistant coach Misty Wilson.
The senior All-American leads the conference in scoring (20.8), rebounding (12.7), field goal percentage (.623) and steals (2.4). She was a six-time LSC Player of the Week this season – three offensive and three defensive.
Also earning an individual superlative was junior transfer, Kathy Thomas, who was named the Lone Star Conference Newcomer of the Year. Thomas, who came to Tarleton from the University of Iowa in the offseason, averaged 10.2 points per game and 3.3 assists per game and started at the point guard and shooting guard position for the TexAnns this season.
Thomas is the fourth Tarleton player to earn the Newcomer of the Year award since its inception in 2004 and the first TexAnn to win it since Peyton Adamson in 2012. Thomas was also named to the Honorable Mention all-LSC team.
Bledsoe was honored with a second-team all-LSC selection after scoring 12.0 points, grabbing 4.8 rebounds and dishing out 3.5 assists per game over the 16 conference contests while Lowrance was named to the LSC All-Academic team. Lowrance averaged 8.2 points and grabbed 4.0 rebounds per game in conference play and maintained a 3.57 grade point average as a Bio-Medical Science major.
