TexAnn softball goes 1-2 against Angelo during weekend tournament

The Tarleton State University TexAnn softball team split games in the Lone-Star Conference opening double-header against Angelo State University Friday after a walk-off hit in the 10th inning.

In the opening game, Erika Menchaca had a walk-off RBI single to bring in Ashley Findorak and end the 10 innings and three and a half hours of play.

In the first inning, the TexAnns got on the first two runs board after back-to-back RBI singles from Emily Jones and Taylor Wells.

The Rambelles came back to even the game after an RBI single and double, but Melody Mayse responded with a solo home run for the TexAnns to take back the lead 3-2.

Taylor Wells then had a triple down the right field line with Bailee Mauldin on first to make the lead 4-2,  Followed by Amber Clifford driving in Wells on an RBI single and a 5-2 lead.

Angelo State got a run in the fourth, followed by another Tarleton run off a Menchada RBI single to the right side to make the score 6-3.

After no runs in the fifth, Angelo State got one in the sixth and two in the seventh to even the score at six and force extra innings.

The TexAnns were unable to get any runs in the eighth and ninth innings, but in the 10th, with Ashley Findorak on second, Menchaca’s base hit brought in the winning run for Tarleton.

Fentress pitched all 10 innings, earning the win and allowing six runs on nine hits and six walks with seven strikeouts. The TexAnns also recorded a season-high 17 hits.

Angelo State evened the series in the second game of the day and the TexAnns fell short after the Rambelles scored in all five innings.

Tarleton had an early one point lead in the first inning after Mayse scored and Kendra Mendoza brought in Katelyn Conlee with an RBI single.

In the second inning, the Rambelles got four runs and took the lead for the rest of the game adding two more in the third.

In the bottom of the third Taylor Wells had a home run and Menchaca, Mendoza and Latta had three straight singles bringing in another run to make the score 7-4.

The Rambelles added three more runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth to bring the score to 17-4 and end the game in the fifth.

Brenna Hennan recorded the loss allowing 17 runs, 14 earned on 14 hits, four walks and one strikeout in 4.1 innings. Conlee pitched the final 0.2 innings.

The TexAnns recorded a total of six hits from Mayse, Conlee, Wells, Menchaca, Mendoza and Latta.

Tarleton finished out the three-game series on Saturday, but couldn’t bring home a win in the final game.

The Rambelles started off the game with a two-run homer to take a 2-0 lead with only one out. ASU then had a double, but the TexAnns got out of the inning without anymore runs after a fly ball to left and a ground ball to second base.

The TexAnns had Taylor Wells on second and Mikayla Stogsdill on third with just one out, but were followed by back-to-back strikeouts leaving the runners on base.

Angelo State got two runs in the fourth and one in the fifth to widen their lead to 5-0.

Bailee Mauldin finally added some runs to the board with a solo home run in the sixth inning, but the TexAnns were unable to get any more, and an infield popup ended the inning.

In the seventh, the Rambelles were unable to score. TexAnn Rylie Chappell was able to get on base off of a walk, but Tarleton was unable to make any runs happen, and fell 5-1 in the third and final game.

Fentress was able to pitch a complete game for the second day straight, making 17 innings and 343 pitches total for the series, and allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks with five strikeouts.

The only TexAnn able to get two hits in the game was Mendoza, while Stogsdill, Melody Mayse, Wells, Mauldin and Erika Menchaca each had one.

The TexAnns will be travelling to Kingsville next weekend for another three-game series beginning with a doubleheader at 5 p.m. on Friday and their final game at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
