Tarleton Tennis upsets No. 2 ranked St. Mary’s

The Tarleton State University TexAnn Tennis team upset the No. 21 nationally ranked and No. 2 regionally ranked St. Mary’s University Rattlers with a 6-3 win in San Antonio on Friday.

Alicia Perez and Mackenzie Mitchell, the region’s eighth-ranked doubles tandem, had one of the first wins of the day for the TexAnns after beating St. Mary’s 8-1. Melanie Barnes and Silvia Nieva also had an early defeat in the No. 3 doubles set, winning 8-4 and putting the TexAnns up 2-0.

The No. 3 ranked doubles tandem, Ivana Zecevic and Luiza Adas, could not pull of the victory, with the Rattlers winning 8-4.

Going into singles play, the region’s No. 3 ranked Perez beat the No. 7 ranked Cristina Lopez 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 1 match.

St. Mary’s tried for a comeback after winning the No. 2 and No. 3 matches to even the score, but Nieva put Tarleton back on top after winning 6-2, 6-4 in the No. 6 spot. Adas then locked in the win for the TexAnns with a 6-3, 6-4 victory in the No. 4 match, while Marina Rull finished off the day with a hard fought 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 win in the No. 5 set.

Tarleton Tennis will be heading to Lawton, Oklahoma on Tuesday for a Lone Star Conference match against South Central Region No. 4 ranked Cameron University starting at 1:30 p.m.
