The Tarleton State University’s Baseball team opened its season Monday Feb. 3 with a 16-3 victory over Winona State at the Houston Winter Invitational held at Minute Maid Park in Houston, TX.

Tarleton’s lineup combined for a total of 18 hits in the win, in only seven innings due to a run-rule. Colten Boothe led the Texans with four runs batted in, three hits, and three runs scored, while Alvaro Moreno was right behind him with three RBIs and three hits.

Troyal Yosko got the start on the mound for the Texans and pitched three innings only allowing one earned run on three hits, Yosko finished the third inning with Tarleton leading 10-1.

Garrett Kelly was handed the ball in the bottom of the fourth as the Texans scored another four runs in the top of the fourth. Kelly gave up two earned runs on four hits and was given the win in his two innings of work. Matt Herrick and Ty Galloway worked the final two innings of the seven inning game and never allowed the Warriors another hit.

The Tarleton offense came alive in the second inning with the first seven batters reaching on six hits before Winona State could even record an out against the Texans. The Texans never looked back, scoring eight runs in the second, two in the third, four in the fourth, and leading off the seventh inning with two more runs. Herrick struck out the side in the bottom of the seven before the game was called due to the run-rule.

Of Tarleton’s 18 hits, Garett Kilgore, Johnathan Schmitz, Boothe, and Moreno all had doubles on the day as Kevin Meredith reached third with the game’s only triple. The Texans totaled 5 extra base hits, drawing eight walks, five stolen bases, and scored 16 runs without hitting a home run.

The Texans play Arkansas Tech, on the final day of the Invitational, on Tuesday Feb. 4 and will have their home opener Friday Feb. 7, as they play a four game series against the Regis Rangers. The first pitch on Friday is scheduled for 3 p.m.
