The TexAnn tennis team is already off to a strong start in the 2014 spring season with a 9-0 sweep over the Texas-Permian Basin in Abilene Saturday.

“We’re excited about the spring season,” Head Coach Lance Drake said. “We return everyone except one from last year’s squad.  We have two new additions, which we hope will add to our depth.”

The TexAnns started off the wins with an 8-1 victory in the No. 3 match by Melanie Barnes and Silvia Nieva.

In the No. 2 match Ivan Zecevic and Luiza Adas dominated with an 8-2 victory, while Alicia Perez and Mackenzie Mitchell fought for their 8-5 triumph in the top-seeded doubles match.

Permian Basin had no chance in the singles matches getting just four points in one set in the No. 2 singles match. Zecevic won that match 6-0, 6-4.

Perez took the No. 1 match 6-2 and 6-0 while rookie TexAnn Ellie Valdivieso finished the No. 3 match 6-1, 6-1.

The TexAnns are back at it on Feb. 8 against St. Edward’s in the TexAnns’ first home match of the season.

“Our goals do not change, as we want to win the conference, and move onto the national tournament to challenge for the top prize,” Drake said. “This conference and region is very tough, and each match will be a great challenge.”
