TexAnns have second half comeback against MSU

The No. 14 TexAnn basketball team traveled to Wichita Falls on Wednesday, Jan. 15, to face rival school Midwestern State University for their fourth game of Lone Star Conference play.

Tarleton started off the game cold, not able to put any points on the board. It wasn’t until the Mustangs went on a 10-0 run that theTexAnns were able to score.

Shanae Lowrance put up the TexAnns’ first two points with a jump shot, then Kiara Wright added two more with a layup.

With Wright and Kathy Thomas getting into foul trouble and being benched early in the first half, the TexAnns struggled to decrease the Mustangs’ lead but weren’t able to get any closer than five points at the 1:52 mark.

With the LSC lead rebounder on the bench, MSU out-rebounded theTexAnns 26-10 in the first half.

MSU was able to get as big as a 13-point lead on the TexAnns during the first half, but Tarleton went into the locker room only trailing by seven (31-24).

Tarleton came into the second half ready to play. The TexAnns started out the half with a 14-4 run during the first 3:49 of the second half and took their first lead of the game at 38-35.

MSU wasn’t quite ready to give up and took the lead back by two with 14:27 left to play.

A jump shot by Karli Moore tied the game up at 40 all and the lead seemed to go back and forth until Wright’s layup gave the TexAnns the last lead change of the game at 50-49.

Tarleton managed to increase their lead to six before the final buzzer sounded, giving them an LSC record of 4-0 and an overall record of 13-1.

Tarleton shot 35.4 percent from the floor (17-48). They were 36 percent from behind the 3-point line and 68 percent from the free throw line.

Wright finished the game with 15 points and 15 rebounds, earning her ninth double-double of the season. She also made her way into Tarleton history as the third TexAnn ever and first in the NCAA era to record 1,000 career points and 1,000 career rebounds.

Also aiding in the TexAnns win over the Mustangs were Brianna Bledsoe with 14 points, Lowrance with seven, MorganAshmore with eight and Raven McGrath with seven. Travanti Downes (3), Karli Moore (3), and Thomas (2) finished out the scoring for the TexAnns.

Tarleton’s next game is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 18 at 5 p.m. in Wisdom Gym against Cameron University.
