February 24, 2014
The TexAnn softball team fell in the tournament finale of the Rattler Invitational Sunday afternoon to St. Mary’s with 6-0.
The Rattlers got ahead early two runs off a 2-RBI single to right field with bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning, putting the TexAnns behind after the first inning for the third time in the five game tournament.
Pitcher Brenna Hennan was able to hold off any runs in the second inning, but the Rattler’s came back to add another in the bottom of the third on a solo home run to left center.
St. Mary’s got their final three runs in the fourth inning after two TexAnn errors allowed two unearned runs, and a sacrifice fly brought in the sixth and final run.
The TexAnn offense was unable to put anything together as Melody Mayse had a single with one out in the second, while Kendra Mendoza also had a single in the fourth.
Hennan took the loss after pitching 3.2 innings and allowing all six runs, she is 4-5 on the season. Three of the runs were earned on six hits, two walks, and two stakeouts.
Randi Fentress pitched relief for the TexAnns in the final 2.1 innings, and shutout St. Mary’s with six of the seven batters she faced being strikeouts.
The TexAnns have now lost the last three games against St. Mary’s, and six of the last seven games with three of those losses being shutouts.
The TexAnns will begin Lone Star Conference Play next weekend at home when they host Angelo State University for a three-game series starting on Friday at 5 p.m.
