No. 6 Texans take down rival MSU

The Texan basketball team faced rivals Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls on Wednesday, Jan. 15, and won the game with a final score of 83-81.

Damion Clemons, with his career-high 16 points, and Chuck Guy, with a game-high 20 points, guided the Texans to their 14th win of the season and third win in Lone Star Conference play.

The Texan basketball team is back to a .500 team with an overall record of 724-724 all-time since Tarleton became a senior college in 1961.

MSU led by as many as 12 points with 8:03 left in the first half, but a 3-pointer by Guy tied the game up at 39-39 with 1:27 left on the clock. Going into the half, MSU led by three due to a 3-pointer shot with 1:04 left until the break.

Tarleton had a first half scoring percentage of 44.44 from inside the 3-point line, 41.67 from downtown, and 71.43 percent from the free throw line with 10-14.

The second half scoring started out going back and forth. MSU came out and hit a layup, but it was answered by a 3-pointer from DeAndre Upchurch.

Clemons tied up the game at 46 all with 16:07 left to play.

MSU came back and took the lead by as much as six before there was a 7-0 Tarleton run to finally give them their first lead of the game with 11:56 left to play.

MSU then took back a small lead until a jump shot by Tashawn Mabry gave the Texans the final lead change of the game.

Tarleton struggled the first half, but three ties and five lead changes later, they ended the game with a two-point win.

Mabry added 16 points for the Texans, while Andrews had 13, Upchurch had seven, Mohammad Lee scored five, and Jon Cathey-Macklin, Davene Carter, and Michael Hardge each added two.

Tarleton’s next game is set for Saturday, Jan. 18, in Wisdom Gym against Cameron University at 7 p.m.
