Tarleton indoor track earns five NCAA Provisional marks

Tarleton State University competed in their last indoor track and field meet of the season Friday, and finished at the top of their game. The Texans and TexAnns had 13 personal bests, two wins and five NCAA provisional qualifying marks collectively.

Winning all five NCAA provisional marks were Tarleton distance and relay runners Lindsey Hinton and Chase Rathke who added the two victories in the Mile Run and 800m run, respectively.

Hinton was a dominating force in the race with a time of 5:03:39, earning her the NCAA mark. Aly Coughlin finished right behind her teammate in second place with a time of 5:05:79, and also earned her second provisional mark of the year in the 3000m run, finishing in second place with a time of 10:10:17.

Rathke dominated on the men’s side, earning an NCAA provisional mark after winning the 800m just 02.91 seconds short of tying the Athletic Training Center record in the event and qualifying in the 800m for his second straight year.

Calrencio Guerrero, Michael Eschbach, Cameron Krc and Gilson Umunnakwe received the fifth provisional mark of the day in the 4x400m relay by finishing third with a time of 3:16.61.

The TexAnns took four top-10 finishes, while on the men’s side the Texans added two more.

In the mile, her first race of the year, Payton Shoush finished in ninth place behind Hinton and Coughlin with a time of 5:27.28. Hinton also finished sixth in the 3000m with a time of 10:33.02, while Katelin Huckabee finished just behind her in seventh place with a time of 10:35.42. For the men, Tye Doty had a third place finish in the 3000m race with a time of 8:40.01.

The men and women’s 4x400m relay teams took the final two top-10s. The men’s team, consisting of Randall Kadlacek, Marquis Thompson, Aaron Donohue and Rathke, finished in seventh with a time of 3:22.74. The women’s team consisting of Jasmine Owens, Kara Bickham, Shelby Greenwalt and Amanda Smith, finished in ninth with a time of 4:01.16.

Randall Kadlacek and Shelby Terry were the only two with a top-10 finish in sprints and hurtles, but five other Texans and three TexAnns recorded personal bests.

Kadlacek finshed fifth in the 55m hurdles with a final time of 7.79, while Terry finished ninth in her 55m hurdles with a time of 8:48.

Owens (1:00.45), Bickham (1:01.52) and Stephanie Kornegay (1:05.91) had their personal bests in the 400m dash, while Krc (49.24), Umunnakwe (49.45), Guerrero (49.64), Thompson (51.23) and Donohue had personal bests on the men’s side in the 400m on an indoor track.

Four Texans received top-5 marks and three other Tarleton athletes earned top-10 status in the jumping and throwing events.

Travis Allison and William Webb claimed third place finishes in the high jump and pole vault, respectively. Allison jumped 2.01m (6’7”), and Webb vaulted a height of 4.65m (14’3”).

Patrick McHale and Kenny Odunaiya were also top-5 finishers in the high jump and shot put. McHale had a jump of 1.86m (6’ 1.25”) earning a fifth-place finish, while Odunaiya earned a fifth-place finish in the shot-put with a distance of 14.99m (49’2”).

Nikki McNorton received the only top-five finish for the TexAnns , finishing fourth in the high jump. In her first action of the season, she jumped 1.58m (5” 2.25”).

Finshing in the top 10, Nic Perez and Odunaiya received sixth-place finishes in the shot put and weight throw, respectively, and Mariis Westbrook finished 10th in the shot put. Perez had a distance of 14.60m (47’ 10.75”), Odunaiya threw the weight 16.02m (52’ 6.75”) and Westbrook placed with a distance of 12.42m (40’ 9”)

The Lone Star Conference Championship is the next meet on the schedule, and will take place at the Texas Tech Athletic Training Center on March 1.
