Texans start off LSC play 1-0

Tarleton State University’s Texan basketball team faced Angelo State University last night in their first Lone Star Conference game of the season and walked away with an 80-54 win over the Rams.

Tarleton started the game out cold and was only able to make one of their first nine shots. ASU was able to get a 13-point lead before only managing to make two of their last 11 shots of the half.

Jakob Damstra was able to close the gap to 10 points with a lay-up before both teams answered with back-to-back shots.

Chuck Guy kicked off a 13-2 Tarleton run when he made two free throws with less than seven minutes left in the first half. With the score at 30-28, Tarleton managed to tie the game, then take the lead with 1:33 left until the half.

ASU tied the game back up, but with nine seconds left, TexanDamion Clemons added two points to make the score 38-36 at the half.

An ASU player received his second technical foul of the game as both teams headed into the locker rooms, which gave Tarleton the chance to start out the second half with two free throws.

Guy sank both shots and Tarleton was unstoppable from then on with three big scoring runs during the second half: 11-2, 13-6, and 16-2.

Guy scored 24 points for the Texans and Tashawn Mabry added 13 from the bench.

Guy also tied a season-high seven rebounds and seven assists. Jon Cathey-Macklin had seven rebounds of his own, and Clemons had a career-high four blocks.

Tarleton has won six of the last seven games against ASU.

The Texans’ next game will be Saturday, Jan. 11, against Texas A&M-Kingsville at Hampton Inn Court in Kingsville at 3 p.m.
