Texans continue undefeated record as 2014 season begins

The No. 9 Tarleton State University men’s basketball team extended their record to 11-0 on Saturday, Jan. 4, in Wisdom Gym against South Dakota Mines. Tarleton was able to defeat the Hardrockers 79-68.

Chuck Guy, who had a game-high 19 points and went 10-10 from the free throw line, guided the Texan offense.

De’Andre  Upchurch managed to add 15 points to the total Texan score, Tashawn Mabry added 12 from the bench, and Michael Hardge scored 10 from the bench.

During the first nine minutes of the game, the score went back and forth with each team matching the other for points. Tarleton managed to kick start a 16-2 run at the 11:37 mark, giving them a 35-19 lead over the Hardrockers.

Tarleton was able to extend their lead to 23 points during the game. South Dakota couldn’t get closer than 12 points of the Texans.

With 1:03 left to play, South Dakota managed to get the score to 75-63, but the Texans fought hard and extended their lead to 16 points. A 5-0 Hardrockers run finished out the game, giving the Texans an 11-point win over South Dakota.

Emmanuel Andrews was able to secure a career- and game-high five rebounds for the Texans.

Tarleton’s next game will be Wednesday, Jan. 8 against Angelo State University in Wisdom Gym at 8 p.m.
