TexAnns have a dominating start to 2014 season

The No. 19 Tarleton State University TexAnn basketball team kicked off the start of 2014 with an all-around dominating performance and an 114-39 victory over Texas College on Thursday, Jan. 2.

The win increased the TexAnns winning streak to six straight games this season.

The game was tied up at 4-4 in the first minute of the game then a three pointer from Kathy Thomas started a 13-0 Tarleton run over the next 3:29. The lead was then 17-4, and the TexAnns never looked back, adding seven more points to Texas College’s two.

In the first half of the game, the TexAnns dominance did not stop. Tarleton went into the half with a 40 point lead after a buzzer-beater free throw jumper by Kiara Wright, making the score 61-21.

The TexAnns outscored the Steers 34-4 in the paint and 16-4 off turnovers in the first half of the game.

Going into the second half, the TexAnns did not let up and outscored Texas College 53-11. In the final 17 minutes, Courtney Randle added a career-high 11 points.

Wright led in scoring with 23 points, but every active TexAnn added points to the board. Brianna Bledsoe added 17 total points, and Thomas (10) was the third starter with double figures.

Ikpeaku Iwobi came off the bench to get her second career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds. Also coming off the bench was Karli Moore with 10 points. Tarleton’s bench outscored the Steers bench 52-12.

Morgan Ashmore (8), Raven McGrath (6), Shanae Lowrance (4), Erin Sims (4), Travanti Downes (4), Margaret Lemke (2), Keyra Johnson (2), and Haley Trentham (1) rounded out the TexAnns scoring for the game.

The TexAnns’ next game will be Wednesday, Jan 8, as they take on Texas Women’s at 5 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
