Texans move to No. 8 in Region

The Tarleton State University Football team moves up two spots, and are ranked No. 8 in the second edition of the NCAA Division II Super Region Four rankings that were released Monday.

Tarleton is currently 6-2 overall and 5-2 against NCAA Division opponents this season. The Texans are now second ranked among Lone Star Conference competitors.

Midwestern State has remained No. 4 and are 7-1, while West Texas A&M dropped four spots and are ranked No. 9 with a 7-2 record.

“The regional rankings are tough to understand when they first come out,” Cary Fowler, head football coach said.  “With our strength of schedule and our combined record against opponents that are regionally ranked, that used to be a huge equation within the regional rankings. But, I think what is holding us back is the Abilene Christian game, because it does not count towards our record. We will only be judged by nine games at the end of the season, instead of 10. But if you look at it, everyone that we have played, excluding Angelo State and Abilene Christian, are a top-10 regionally ranked team.”

Colorado State is currently undefeated at 9-0 and ranked first on the list that includes Ohio Dominican at second with a 8-0 record.  Saginaw Valley is 8-1 and third on the list. Indianapolis (8-1) jumped up a spot to No. 5 this week, and Grand Valley State rounds out the top six with a 7-2 record.

Chadron Sate remains at No. 7 with a  7-2 record this week, and Ferris State breaks into the top ten with a 6-3 record.

The teams that are ranked in the top six in the region earn a bid to play in the NCAA Division II national playoffs. The top two teams get a bye, while the third and fourth ranked teams get to host a first-round playoff game.

The Tarleton football team will be home this Saturday Nov. 9 hosting Southwestern Oklahoma.  Kickoff is at 2 p.m. at Tarleton Memorial Stadium.
