Men’s rodeo team finishes first in Frank Phillips Rodeo

The Tarleton State University men and women’s rodeo teams traveled to Perryton on Oct. 10-12 to compete in the Frank Phillips Rodeo. The men’s team won first place with a total of 560 points and the women’s team placed third with 85 total points. Five Tarleton competitors placed first in their individual events.

Richmond Champion finished first in bareback riding by winning the long and short rounds with scores of 81 and 69, respectively.

In saddle bronc riding, Travis Nelson and Colton Miller both made the short round. Nelson had a long round score of 66 and won the short round with a score of 74. Miller finished with a 62 in the long round, but was bucked off before the buzzer in the short round.

Two Tarleton calf ropers advanced to the short round. Billy Bob Brown won the long round with a time of 10.10 seconds, but failed to complete the short round. Garrett Rose had a long round time of 10.40 seconds, but also wasn’t able to finish the short round.

Jace Melvin took fourth in steer wrestling. Melvin had a long round time of 7.70 seconds and a short round time of 5.7 seconds.

In team roping, Billy Bob Brown and his Eastern New Mexico University partner won first place with a long round time of 6.7 seconds and a short round time of 6.5 seconds. Colton Herrera and his Weatherford College partner had a time of 7.2 seconds in the long round and 8.5 seconds in the short round, which earned them fourth place.

Tarleton had three barrel racers make the short round: Emily Efurd, Lindsey Trammell, and Brenna Donnelly. Efurd placed first with a long round time of 17.48 seconds and a short round time of 17.38 seconds. Trammell’s long round time of 17.72 seconds and short round time of 17.52 seconds earned her fourth. Donnelly had a long round time of 17.87 seconds and a short round time of 24.5 seconds, but didn’t have quick enough times to place.

Breakaway ropers Ashley Roberts, Katey Jo Anthony and Kortni McConnell each advanced to the short round. Roberts finished third with long and short round times of 3.70 seconds. Anthony tied for first in the long round with a time of 2.80 seconds and a long round time of 12.50 seconds to give her fifth place. McConnell finished the long round in 3.20 seconds, but failed to complete the short round.

The last first place finish for the Texans came in goat tying for McKenna Wagner. Wagner won the long and short rounds with times of 7.30 seconds and 7.1 seconds, respectively. Baili Collins placed third with a long round time of 8.00 seconds and a short round time of 8.3 seconds. Anthony had a long round time of 8.00 seconds and a short round time of 11.00, but wasn’t able to place.

The men’s team is currently ranked first in the southwestern region with 1,375 total points and the women’s team is ranked third in the region with 402 total points. The teams will travel to Lubbock Oct. 17-19 to compete in the Texas Tech Rodeo.
