Tarleton rodeo teams each bring home gold

 

The Tarleton State University men and women’s rodeo teams traveled to Alpine on Oct.24-26 for the Sul Ross State University Rodeo. Both teams finished with grand champion titles. The men’s team scored a total of 445 points, making their Southwestern regional total 2,320 for the semester and keeping their first place spot in the region. The women’s team scored 300 points, making their regional total 762 and putting them in third place in the region. Four competitors managed to finish at the top of their individual event.

Richmond Champion took it all in the bareback riding. He had a long round score of 74 and a short round of 81, giving him 150 total points and earning a first place win. Colt Bruce finished fourth in the event with a long round score of 72 and a short round score of 71. Coming in sixth was Shon Gibson with a long round score of 67 and a short round score of 72. Brandon Confalone and Kyle Johnson had long round scores of 76 and 58, respectively, but weren’t able to complete the short round. Confalone’s efforts earned him seventh place.

For the saddle bronc riding, Chet Smith was top Texan. His long round score of 72 and short round score of 66 helped him to finish third. Travis Nelson and Ty Tapp also advanced to the short round with long round scores of 74 and 56, respectively, but couldn’t stay on long enough to complete the short round.

Three Texans made the short round in calf roping. Billy Bob Brown, currently sitting first in the Southwest region all-around, took home first with a long round time of 9.30 seconds and a short round time of 8.1 seconds. Josh Dunn’s long round time of 9.70 and short round time of 10.3 earned him sixth place. Ilse Russel finished the long and short rounds in 9.5 seconds and 11.5 seconds, respectively, but wasn’t able to place in the event.

Only one Tarleton competitor was able to make the short round in steer wrestling. Samuel Williams had a time of 5.8 seconds in the long round, but scored a no time for the short round and was unable to place.

In the barrel racing, Jaime Barrow finished third with a long round time of 16.94 seconds and a short round time of 16.87 seconds. Lindsey Trammel was able to come in just behind Barrow in fourth place. Trammel’s long and short round were clocked at 17.16 seconds and 17.24 seconds, respectively. Cheyenne Veatch tied for seventh place. Veatch had a long round time of 17.25 seconds and a short round time of 17.27 seconds.

McKenna Wagner was the only Tarleton competitor to make it back for round two of the breakaway roping. Wagner finished the long round in 2.80 seconds, but wasn’t able to complete the short round and scored a no time, causing her to not place in the event.

Goat tying was the final event with a Tarleton first place finish. Baili Collins won the long round with a time of 6.9 seconds and finished the short round in 7.6 seconds. Her 160 point total gave her a first place finish.

The rodeo teams are finished for the fall 2013 semester, but return on March 20-22 of 2014 with the Odessa College rodeo.
