Indoor Track & Field Team to become element of Tarleton Athletics

The Tarleton State University Athletics department has officially announced the addition of a new sports team. The Tarleton men’s and women’s indoor track and field teams will be added to the list of sports this fall.

“It’s a new chapter in track and field here at Tarleton. When you look at the dynamics of indoor track and field, it’s an exciting sport because of the nature of it being indoors. It’s a very spectator friendly sport,” said head track and field coach, Pat Ponder.

This will be the second season for the LSC to have indoor track and field. This year there will be six men’s teams and eight women’s teams competing for the title of conference champion.

“The timing is spot on with the conference encouraging all the teams to sponsor indoor track and field. If we hadn’t added it, I think other schools would have used it as a recruiting tool against us. The kids are excited and I am too,” continued Coach Ponder.

Sophomore, Shelby Greenwalt of Shamrock, Texas is looking forward to this new journey. “It’s going to be a positive experience for us. It should help us out a lot for our outdoor season since we’ll already be used to competing. We’ll have an entire season behind us while other outdoor seasons are just getting started.”

The season will start in January and go through March. Ponder hopes to have three regular season meets added to the schedule before the LSC Championship meet and the National Championship meet. Outdoor track and field season will overlap the postseason indoor track & field meets.

“There’s nothing but advantages to having indoor track and field. I’d like to thank our administration for this opportunity,” said Ponder. “I appreciate the athletics administration for their support of track and field and for our student-athletes.”
