Subdivision artwork to be displayed in Fine Arts Center

The Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center is hosting the artwork of Margret Hiden, Libby Rowe and H. Jennings Sheffield until Sept. 26. The exhibit, entitled Family as the Vernacular, features a cul-de-sac style model displaying images of families in a home setting as well as individual digital displays on canvas.

“The theme of the exhibit is about the different ways photos of the family that might be normally seen as personal actually can speak a language that has meaning to all viewers,” Art and Digital Media professor Chris Ireland said.

Though the artists are from various parts of the country, they have come together to form a series that provokes the viewer to recall their own memories while observing those of others. The style of vernacular imagery refers to the use of candid photographs on a natural setting as if to display a personal message of nostalgia to its viewers.

“The display is unique and combines photography, digital media and sculpture,” Ireland said.

The artwork can be viewed from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays, and the artists will appear at the Brown Bag Lecture on Sept. 19 at noon.

“Everyone should come and hear what inspired the artists’ work,” Ireland said. “They have had their hands in several different projects that use similar themes.”
