W.K. Gordon Center features free movie

On Aug. 17, the W.K. Gordon Center will feature the original 1933 Alice In Wonderland at 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

“This program offers our visitors a unique opportunity to experience a form of entertainment that was available for Thurber residents,” Lauren Giffin, W.K. Gordon Center for Industrial History of Texas Museum Assistant, said. “It also allows visitors of all ages the chance to sit back and enjoy classic films.  So far we have shown Dracula, Babes in Toyland, The Sheik and King Kong. Our next Night Out at the Opera House will feature the 1933 Alice in Wonderland.”

Admission is free, but seating is limited to the first 25 guests. To reserve a seat, call 254-968-1886 or email [email protected].

“We screen the film in the W.K. Gordon Center’s museum Opera House that holds around 25 people, so it is important that people make reservations in advance,” Giffin said.

“The Night Out at the Opera House” began at the Gordon Center in Oct. 2012. Every month, the center features a film from the 1920’s and 1930’s free to the public.

“When Thurber ghost town was a boom town, the downtown featured an opera house that seated over 600 people. The Thurber Opera House originally showcased live performances by popular groups, however from the 1920’s through the 1930’s, it also featured silent and later “talkies” films. We show silent and ‘talkies’ films from that time period,” Giffin said.

Also, every Sunday, the W.K. Gordon Center hosts a program. The next program will be Sept. 8 and feature beekeeping. For more information and details on this program visit www.tarleton.edu/gordoncenter or www.facebook.com/wkgordoncenter.

The W.K. Gordon Center is located at Exit 367 on Interstate 20 in Thurber, TX, between Fort Worth and Abilene.

“From Stephenville, travel on 108 north until you hit Interstate 20. Turn left at the stop sign to continue for an additional 3 miles to the W.K. Gordon Center on your left,” Giffin said.
