Green River Ordinance will GROw on you.

Take some folk, throw in some gospel, finish it off with a little pop and what do you get? You get the awesome band, Green River Ordinance.

A little over a year ago, 95.9 The Ranch featured a band, that I had never heard of before on their Sunday afternoon acoustic show. Shortly thereafter, I noticed that the band was getting a lot of airtime from The Ranch. The band, from Ft Worth is called Green River Ordinance.

The band started when the Ice brothers (Geoff and Jamey) met Josh Jenkins back in grade school, then in college the band grew even more. While in college, the band would have nightly gigs in various towns in Texas. They would go to the concert that night and the next day go to class.

The band admitted that their grades began to drop when their music started to soar. During their college years, the Ice brothers’ mother entered them into a contest with a local radio station to open up for Bon Jovi.

Without any knowledge of this at the time, the college band, made up of five guys around 19 years old, won the contest and opened up for Bon Jovi at American Airlines Center. That is when they realized that they would rather take a career in music over being full time college students.

On June 18, the band will be releasing a new EP called “Chasing Down The Wind” which features seven tracks.

The first song that easily caught my attention was “Flying.” The intro to the song has a fast paced acoustic guitar that, to me, sounds almost like the Eagles “Peaceful Easy Feeling.”

Then the first verse welcomes in the listener with catchy lyrics. Shortly thereafter, the banjo makes an appearance in the song to keep the fast paced beat going steady.

Towards the end of the song, the sound levels on the vocals drop and have a duet with the percussion while slowly getting louder to bring the punch back in the love song. To end out the excellent song, the vocals have a solo.

The next song I like is “Better Love.” This song talks about religion and God’s forgiveness. This song has bold vocal solos and a soft banjo part.

My next favorite song on the album is “It Ain’t Love.” The band just released the video for this song. I love this song because it gives the listener a taste into the songwriter’s definition of the word “love.”

I love this band. Granted, I would not say they are a band that you would jam on a road trip with your best friends, but I would highly recommend this band for a quiet night at home with that special someone.

As I said earlier, they are not really “Texas Country.” In fact, I don’t know what to call their genre. The closest thing I can compare them to is Old Crow Medicine Show if they met Parachute and found some old Eagles vinyl records and started a band.

Overall, the band Green River Ordinance gets a very high passing grade from me.
