LJT- Day 2: Horse head masks, fiddles and lots of beer

Day two of Larry Joe Taylor Texas Music Festival was much warmer than day one, so the fans were out to enjoy the great weather. The day started off with a band that’s new to the Texas country scene, the Green Light Pistols. GLP, from Burleson, is made up of “five siblings and a boyfriend” according to bandleader, Brook Wallace. They are a “real different, kind of Celtic, kind of folk rock ” band, said Wallace.

When it comes to influences, Wallace said she is into jazz and bluegrass while Chad (Fincher) is in to jazz and rock. Wallace said that she thinks people should listen to them because they are “young and different and [they] have a lot to offer to everybody.”

During the band’s set, they covered Cage The Elephant’s “Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked” and FUN’s “Some Nights.”

“Well, that’s just some of what we listen to. I don’t know of anybody who covers either one of those songs, we’re all about being different and we were like ‘hey, if we covered this, it wouldn’t be at all like the original. We can kind of make it our own and it’s a song we already love,” said Wallace.

I definitely ‘fan-boyed’ over this band. Made up of a fiddle, a mandolin, keyboard, bass guitar, acoustic guitar and Cajun percussions, they almost reminded me of Mumford and Sons. With the band’s cover of Cage The Elephant and over all folksiness of the band, I was stunned by their performance on the LJT main stage. Not to be too hipster, but I love how this band is different from what I hear on the radio everyday. I simply cannot wait to hear more from the Green Light Pistols.

Next on stage was Whiskey Myers. The southern rock band had the crowd going from the first song to the last. The part I liked most about their set was when they played “Bar, Guitar and a Honkey Tonk Crowd.” The crowd knew every word and yelled every one of them while lead man Cody Cannon kept calm and cool as if he was singing to himself the entire time.

Next on stage was Stoney LaRue. From start to finish, LaRue put on a stellar set. My favorite part of it was his encore when he came back on to play “Oklahoma Breakdown.”

Casey Donahew Band was next on stage. Not to draw any bad blood, but I am not the biggest CDB fan. Saying that, I must admit, he brought the party. The southern rock band had the crowd yelling, screaming and begging for more before the band was even off the stage. My favorite part of CDB’s set was when they played Matchbox 20’s “3 A.M.” Honestly, I thought it was random that they played it, but I loved the song with a fiddle in it.

The last band of the night was one of the hottest bands on the scene right now, the Josh Abbott Band. Before the band took the stage, fans packed the pit as tightly as they could to get a good view. When the band came on, the crowd blew up. Throughout the set, JAB played fan favorites like “You Ain’t Met My Texas Yet,” “I Just Want To Love You,” “Miss You Again” and “Brushy Creek.”

Tonight’s lineup consists of Radney Foster on the Allsup’s Stage and on the main stage is The Damn Quails, Brandon Rhyder, Reckless Kelly, Wade Bowen and the Randy Rogers Band.
