On Thursday, April 11, Tarleton State University played its final home tennis match of the season and swept the visiting McMurry University Warhawks 9-0, but was upset on the road against No. 27 Midwestern State University in a heartbreaking 5-4 match in the regular season finale on Saturday.

Tarleton opened up Thursday’s final home match with dominating performances in the top two doubles matches. Alicia Perez / Karla Martinez (No. 1) and Melanie Barnes / Ivana Zecevic (No. 2) both easily defeated their opponents with 8-0 matches.  The No. 3 team of Mackenzie Mitchell and Marina Rull played the closest match of the day but still won 8-5.

In singles action, the Texanns equally controlled the day. The Warhawks didn’t make a dent against Perez (6-2, 6-0), Martinez (6-0, 6-1), Barnes (6-1, 6-1) Zecevic (6-0, 6-0), Rull (6-0, 6-0) and Silvia Nieva (6-1, 6-0).

The final away match of the season on Saturday did not go as smoothly.

Things started out okay with Tarleton taking the doubles matches 2-1. Alicia Perez and Karla Martinez took the No. 1 match 8-6, while Mackenzie Mitchell and Marina Rull won the No. 3 match 8-4. Melanie Barnes and Ivana Zecevic lost the No. 2 game 8-2.

The Texanns fought long and hard, but were overcome in singles play. Perez won her battle in the top spot 7-5, 6-3 while Martinez added on to her 15-match winning streak in a 6-2, 6-0 win in the No. 2 spot. Barnes (3-6, 6-2, 4-6) and Rull (7-5, 2-6, 3-6) pushed their matches to three sets in their respective No. 3 and 5 matches, but were not able to hold on in the end. Zecevic (3-6, 3-6) and Silvia Nieva (2-6, 0-6) dropped the No. 4 and 6 matches.

In post-season play, The Tarleton Texanns will return this week in the LSC Championship Tournament at Southlake beginning Friday at 1:30 pm. Tarleton is expected to open the tournament against Texas A&M-Kingsville.
