No. 28 TexAnns finish up Arizona tournament 1-2, but dominate the finale

Tarleton finished the Academy of Arts Tournament in Phoenix with an 8-1 win over Montana State-Billings.

On Friday Feb. 8, The TexAnns were swept by Fresno Pacific. Next, they lost a close battle 4-5 to Point Loma Nazarene.

The TexAnns opened against Point Loma by taking two of three in doubles play. Alicia Perez and Karla Martinez won the No. 1 match 8-1 while Ivana Zecevic and Melanie Barnes won 8-3 in the No. 2 match. Makenzie Mitchell and Silvia Nieva lost a close 6-8 in the third match.

In singles, Perez won 6-3, 6-0 in the No. 1 spot, while Barnes won in the No. 4 spot 6-1, 6-2. The rest of the TexAnns lost their rounds in super-tiebreakers: Martinez (2-6, 6-4, 5-10), Zecevic (6-2, 4-6, 10-5) and Mitchell (3-6, 6-0, 7-10).

In the tournament finale, Tarleton defeated Montana State-Billings.

All three TexAnn doubles teams claimed victories: Perez and Martinez (8-5), Zecevic and Barnes (8-1) and Nieva and April Downing (8-4).

In singles, Perez (6-3, 6-1), Martinez (6-3, 6-0) and Barnes (6-0, 6-0) easily won their matches. Mitchell suffered the only defeat in her No. 4 match, while Nieva (6-1, 6-1) and Downing (6-0, 3-6, 12-10) were victorious in the No. 5 and No. 6 spots.

After a break this week, the TexAnns will head Arkadelphia, Arkansas at the Ouachita Baptist Quad on March 2 and play at 10 a.m.
