Fuzzy’s Taco Shop: A good place to stop

The main dining area of Fuzzy’s

If you’re looking for a new place to grab some food, try Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. Fuzzy’s opened on March 22 and it was the place to be for dinner that night. Hosting some recognizable teachers from Tarleton State University, even some celebrities within the community and many college students, many were there for the opening night of Fuzzy’s.

Before I walked into the establishment, I noticed that in the front there was a massive patio with picnic tables on it. I like this because it gives a “come as you are”/ friendly atmosphere to the restaurant. When I walked in, I also noticed that there was a “main” dining room, a cantina-type dining area, and a side dining room, providing ample space throughout the restaurant. Also in the main dining room, I saw four flat screen televisions that all had sports playing. I am an avid baseball fan, so I was excited that there was a new place to eat food and watch the Texas Rangers play.

When I arrived, the line to the register was well past the entry door into the main dining area. I walked to the back of the line and then waited from 7:08 until 7:50, which on a normal night, I would have a major problem with, but since it was the first night, it was understandable.

While waiting, I noted that some of the more popular items being ordered were Original Nachos (some with chicken, some beef, some pork) and Baja Tacos. Also, it seemed that a lot of people were enjoying one of the many margaritas that Fuzzy’s offers.

The workers were doing everything possible to make the atmosphere enjoyable for the customers. Whether it was cleaning tables, answering the phone, or delivering food everyone, seemed to be doing something. This was my second impression of the place which, like the first, made me like it before I had even ordered my food.

I ordered three soft Baja Tacos, with no lettuce or tomatoes (leaving shredded cheese, cilantro, feta cheese and garlic sauce) – one was shredded beef, one shredded spicy pork, and the other grilled shrimp and a large drink. My total came out to be $8.62, which I thought was a very reasonable price for what I had ordered.

After I ordered my food, though very crowded, I had just enough time to get my drink and find a table to sit at before my food was ready. It was pleasing to see that the kitchen staff was so fast and efficient.

Everything was just as I ordered. The first taco I ate was the shredded beef. The taste of the beef was amazing, along with the creaminess of the cheeses, the freshness of the cilantro and the subtle kick of the garlic sauce. All of the elements came together perfectly. Then came the spicy pork taco. I didn’t think it was very good. The spicy pork, the cilantro and the kick of the garlic sauce made it way too overpowering. Finally, I ate the grilled shrimp taco. I really liked the way the garlic and the cilantro brought a “fresh garden” taste to the seafood taste of the shrimp. The three tacos were all served on corn tortillas, which I am not a fan of, but with the garlic sauce and the cheeses, I enjoyed it. Something else I liked about Fuzzy’s was that they are not afraid to make big plates of food.

During my meal, employees came by three times to make sure everything was going well, and even the manager came by to check in, which I appreciated very much.

There was not much I did not like about my experience there, but there was one big problem I had. Though the restaurant had a P.A. system, there were workers shouting out order numbers and even talking to the customers over a mega-phone, which got very annoying after a while.

Despite the noise problem, I will be eating at Fuzzy’s Taco Shop again.

The restaurant is located on 265 East Washington Street, which is just walking distance from the courthouse. The phone number is (254) 965- 3474 and the hours are 7:00 a.m. – 10:00 p.m.
