Tarleton police officer runs for Sheriff

Tarleton State University police officer Cody Beam filed to run for Erath County Sheriff on Dec. 5.

In a press release, Beam said that he is “looking forward to this race and the opportunity to continue my career in public services. I have a lot to offer as sheriff and bring both experience and professionalism to the table, as well as some fresh ideas about administration and protecting the citizens of Erath County.”

Tommy Bryant, who held the position for 15 years, has established programs such as an inmate work program, the SALT board (Seniors and Lawmen Together) and various neighborhood watch programs.

In an interview, Beam said that his official title right now is a police officer at Tarleton State University. As a police officer here, he does patrol work, makes arrests, escorts students safely home, hires new recruits and he also teaches a Rape Aggression Defense class (R.A.D.).

Beam has over 1,200 hours of advanced training from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officers Standards and Education , and holds an Advanced Peace Officer License. He is also a Certified Field Training Officer, according to the Facebook page “Cody Beam for Sheriff”.

Beam’s only opponent, Bryant has been in the position unopposed since 1997. Beam, who graduated from Stephenville High School in 1993, worked as a deputy for his opponent for a short time.

When asked, “what is it like to run against a former employer?” Beam replied, “It probably will be a little strange, but it is an elected position, so anyone has a right to run.”

Bryant was not available for comment before publication.
