2011 Football wrap up

Head football coach Cary Fowler has more reasons to be happy going into the off-season than he did in his first year as head coach.

The Texans started the season out 0 – 3 facing losses to Abilene Christian, West Alabama and Texas State. They were not able to obtain their first win until week four when they took on Eastern New Mexico.

The Texans were able to get into a steady winning streak by mid October when a victory against Texas A&M commerce began a winning streak throughout the rest of their season, including a 44 – 3 win against the Millsaps Majors in the final home game.

Fowler finished the season off with a record of 6 – 5, leaving the season with a five game winning streak. “We finished strong going into the offseason,” Fowler said. “There’s not many teams that win their last five games in a row.”

Although Fowler does not like to compare to previous years, he considers the 2011 season successful. “We battled, we were able to compete and nobody blew us out,” Fowler said. “We got beat [with] lopsided scores like with Midwestern and West Texas but they weren’t blowout games.”

After their loss to Midwestern, the Texans managed to find a way to win against every other opponent, even if it was by a small margin. “We found a way to win the game and make plays when the game was on the line,” Fowler said. “That was the maturity of our football team. All we’re looking at is that we’ve won five games in a row going into the offseason.”

Coaches always refer to their third year as the magic year. This is because the players that were recruited as freshman have had a chance to grow in the system and learn the teamwork necessary to win games. 2012 will be Fowler’s third year as head coach for the Texans. “We had 47 freshmen on our 100-man roster,” Fowler said. “I’m feeling like our future’s bright. The question now is, how are they going to do in school, are we gonna be able to retain them in the offseason, and what are we going to do that allows the game to be fun and not like a job and work.”

If the variation between 2010 and 2011 is any indication of what 2012 will be like, Fowler’s third year might be a magic year.
