Barnes and Noble no more

Changes at Tarleton State University have been happening all around campus. One change that took place this past semester was with the Tarleton Campus Bookstore.

The bookstore, located on the main level of the Barry B. Thompson Student Center, changed from a Barnes and Noble college bookseller to being contracted with the Follett Corporation.

“Selecting Follett ensures that Tarleton’s local bookstore operation will be centrally focused on serving Tarleton’s students – driving affordability and access to those materials necessary for success both in and out of the classroom,” said Carrie McCann, manger of the bookstore.

The bookstore will still offer textbooks for purchase or rental, and will continue to serve as an outlet for various other supplies such as Scantrons and writing utensils.

McCann said, “The Tarleton State University Bookstore now uses an efficient system that permits conducting purchases and rentals at the same register – speeding up the checkout process.”

The change will also bring about other means of convenience for students, such as vending machines stocked with school supplies in the Dick Smith Library and the Southwest Metroplex campus.

One interesting new change to the bookstore is the availability of CafeScribe, a new type of digital textbook.

According to McCann, “CafeScribe digital textbooks, offering savings of 40 percent to 60 percent off the price of buying new. With CafeScribe, students can read, highlight, take notes, search, sort and summarize, all within a digital version of their textbook. The cloud-based digital platform can be accessed on a PC or Mac desktop as well as laptops and most web enabled devices, including iPads and iPhones, Android tablets and smartphones.”

Students are encouraged, but not required, to use the Tarleton Campus Bookstore to purchase or rent their textbooks.

Follett is the nation’s largest operator of college bookstores with more than 800 locations and generates more than $2.7 billion in annual sales both in-store and online.
