Do more than just wear pink
October 17, 2016
We’ve made it to October, and you know what that means; Pumpkin Spiced Latte’s and Breast Cancer Awareness. Everyone wears pink ribbons and scarves, and the NFL actually acts like they care about women. But in the middle of all this, I ask one thing; what are you doing besides wearing pink?
This year alone, more than 240,000 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, and more than 40,000 women will die from breast cancer. Breast cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer death in women, behind lung cancer.
My godmother, Alice Abraham lost her battle to breast cancer in 2003, so when I say I’m sick of your fake caring, I mean it.
While putting “#breastcancerawareness” on your Instagram photo may get you likes, it does nothing for the greater good. Your hashtags and clothing do not save lives.
My mother is a Senior Research Coordinator for metastatic breast cancer at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. She sees patients from all age and ethnic spectrums. Breast cancer affects everyone and everything. Men too (you are not exempt).
The average price for a mammogram is $100 without insurance. Many women do not have have adequate healthcare and cannot afford the luxury of a prolonged life because they cannot afford a mammogram every year. This is a worthy cause to get behind.
Donate to Susan G. Komen, walk in the Avon Walk, do something! All I’m saying is, do more than just wear pink.
