Yell contest began in the 1980’s. Different student led organizations perform dance moves, move in formations all while chanting to well- known songs with original lyrics that are filled with Tarleton traditions. Three judges select the top three teams and

Right before the beating of the drum is the snake dance. The snake dance usually occurs right after yell contest.

Students snake dance from the gym and from there, they start the beating of the drum. The beating of the drum started in the 1920’s. The rivalry was huge between JTAC and NTAC. One school or the

other would burn the bonfire before the schedule time so a drum “was beaten 24 hours a day until kick off of the football game to discourage NTAC students from invading campus.”
