ULTRA Club to host Big Band Dance

Rachel Crawford, Managing Editor

On Feb. 3, Tarleton State University’s ULTRA (Unlocking Limits That Restrict Achievement) Club is hosting the annual Big Band Dance
at 8 p.m. in the Barry B. Thompson Student Center Ballrooms. This year’s theme is “Fly Me to the Moon.”

ULTRA Club was founded in 1985 by Dr. Don Beach and Dr. C. John Keith.

“ULTRA Club is a community arts organization whose mission is to enhance art education at Tarleton,” Dr. Teresa Davidian, Department Head of Fine Arts, said.

“Thanks to ULTRA Club, students have the financial means to travel to museums and performance competitions, attend master classes and lectures by guest performers and artists, receive scholarships and perform in places like Italy, Chicago and Carnegie Hall in New York.”

The dance features a 20-piece band playing hits from the “golden age of swing” according to Davidian. Assistant Professor, Greg Ball, will lead the band, which consists of community members, Tarleton students and faculty.

This year is Ball’s last year to lead the band, as he plans to retire in

May after 27 years of directing of Tarleton’s jazz bands.

Sales for the Big Band Dance began Jan 23, in Room 105E in the Clyde H. Wells Fine Arts Center and will be sold at the door at 7:30 p.m. on the night of the dance.

Admission is $8 for students and $15 for non-students. All proceeds will support scholarships for Tarleton fine arts students.
