Two Tarleton State University alumni will be opening a store on Stephenville’s downtown square. SlimPickins Outfitters, which will be located at 200 W. Washington St., was dreamt up by alumni Jahmicah C. Dawes, Creative Director, and Jonathan Powell, Director of Business.

Dawes attended Tarleton and graduated in 2004 with a Fashion and Merchandising degree. Powell graduated in 2015 in Business Administration and then again in December of 2016 with a Master of Business Administration.

“Tarleton played such a major part in our lives. We met our wives through Paradigm Collegiate Ministries, and we learned to grow where we are planted,” Dawes said

“Jonathan and I met through ministry and have done missions both local and abroad together. The missions we’ve done, we’ve been fortunate enough to see parts of the world and with that, it’s our purpose for the shop to impact the world.”

SlimPickins will specialize in outdoor clothing and materials.

“The idea comparing us to a Bass Pro Shops is fair because a lot of people know of it, but we will be an apparel and footwear shop along with accessories in the store as well that will equip you to venture out,” Powell said.

“We will have brands that will appeal to everyone, both what college and the community likes to wear. That’s how we got the idea; everyone around here is interested in dressing with the same types of brands but make those their own styles,” Dawes said. “Not many of those stores however, are offered here in Stephenville, so we are bringing them here so you don’t have to go drive to a bigger city to get it.”

The store will carry clothing brands like SP Outfitters (their own brand), Fayettechill Clothing Company, Howler Brothers and Columbia Sportswear. The store will also carry footwear brands such as Sanuk and Chaco. They will also offer lifestyle Brands such as, Sic Cups, Smitty’s Mustache Wax, Goal Zero, Kammok Hammocks, P.F. Candle Co. and more.

“Both of us being Christians, we want to glorify God in everything we do, so that naturally carries over to this business,” Powell said.

“Our mission statement and core beliefs are ‘Act justly in the way we do business, love kindly the people we meet and serve humbly the local and global community for the Glory of Jesus Christ.’”

According to Dawes, a Tarleton Block ‘T’ will be placed above the dressing rooms in ode to Tarleton.

“If not to shop, we would love people to just come in and take pictures and look around,” Dawes said. “We wanted to create an atmosphere that students enjoy shopping at.”

Dawes and Powell’s future vision is to give 10 percent of profits to local and global like-minded organizations such as theirs and they hope to start a network for others who want to start businesses for the same reason that they did.

SlimPickins Outfitters will have an online store, which will open on February 20, when pre-orders can be made at www.SlimPickinsOutfitters. com.

Dawes and Powell encourage everyone to follow their social media for updates and new items in the store at @spoutfitter and include their slogan ‘Adventure Out’ when tagging pictures using the hashtag #AdventureOut.
