Social work program places pin in suicide prevention

Students at Tarleton’s Fort Worth campus held a demonstration to increase awareness of suicide and prevention.

The month of September has been identified as suicide awareness month by the Student Social Work Association-FW. During this month they have made various efforts to educate all learners through social media, brochures and various flyers placed inside of classrooms that consisted of various facts pertaining to suicide. For example, the literature consisted of statistical rates, preventative measures and identifiers of someone contemplating suicide.

On September 23, the Fort Worth Student Social Work Association planned a campus wide demonstration to educate and to highlight individuals that were affected by suicide. The demonstration consisted of pinwheels placed in a designated area in the campus parking lot. As learners were making their way to classes, they were approached by an organizational member. During this time they were offered candy, provided literature and given the opportunity to write the name of their love one that ended their lives through suicide on a pinwheel. Afterwards, the pinwheels were placed in a memorial circle that students gathered around to fellowship. There were several students that expressed their thankfulness to participate in this suicide awareness/prevention demonstration.
