10 things to do this Spring Break

Affordable getaways for college students

As it is getting closer to midterms, every college student out there is probably feeling weighed down with homework, or maybe even about to scream into their pillow if they have to pull another all-nighter. A lot are probably fantasizing about Spring Break, a magical time in fantasyland when everyone will finally have the time to sleep in and escape from the academic stress of the school year. Fortunately, Spring Break is not too far away, so here are 10 things for college students to do with friends, or by themselves, to destress and have a good time this Spring Break.

  1. Camping: Round up some friends and pitch a few tents at a state or national park. Dinosaur Valley in Glen Rose, or Cleburne State Park are great options near the Stephenville, Texas area. Wherever the group decides to go, come prepared with plenty of snacks, hot dogs, and s’mores to roast around the fire so that nobody starves in the wilderness. A few days filled with hiking, fishing, and stargazing will surely make for a memorable Spring Break adventure
  2.  Beach: Drive to a nearby beach for a day — or weekend — of tan lines and good times. Whether one can be found in the ocean or sand, the beach has something to offer for everyone. Partying on the beach seems pretty fun, college kids do that all the time. The beach is a great getaway for those who are not the partying type. Collecting sea shells and building sand castles is a great way to channel everyone’s inner child. The coastal scenery makes for the perfect Instagram pictures, and for seafood lovers, it is the perfect place to dine.
  3. Foodie Tour: Speaking of food, it would not be a bad idea to explore local cuisine by visiting new restaurants, food trucks, farmers markets, or other vendors. This, of course, applies to any Spring Break destination. It can be just as important to taste new places as it is to see them.
  4. Drink Tour: A bold twist on this would be to go to every bar in the area and try their signature drinks. Be careful when going alone or with a group. While one might need their friends to look after their drink or help find the bathroom, this could also lead to some questionable decision-making. Maybe some students do not wish to start the rest of the semester with matching tattoos. For a more tame experience, try wine tasting.
  5. Road Trip: This is a great idea for someone who has a lot of friends who live near other in-state colleges. Grab as many people as possible, and just go visit each other. Or take a big happy group to look for sightseeing and new adventures on the open road. Blast a Spotify playlist with everyone’s favorite nostalgic songs and roll the windows down, screaming out the lyrics. The whole group is sure to have the best time.
  6. DIY Spa Day: While many college students can not afford a destination vacation, some may not wish to leave home at all. Maybe it is because they are a homebody, or the stress of midterms really got to them. Either way, they can create their own spa experience at home by relaxing in the bathtub, giving themselves a facial, and doing some yoga or meditation.
  7. Volunteer Vacation: Make this Spring Break meaningful by volunteering for a worthy cause, and serving others. A great way to do this would be to volunteer for a local soup kitchen or food bank. Or better yet, Tarleton State University has offered an “Alternative Spring Break” opportunity in Memphis, Tennessee, where students will go with the Serve 901 organization to serve the Memphis community. Even if you did not apply by the February 16th deadline, maybe that is something to think about doing next year.
  8. Cultural Excursion: Have any friends that are Humanities majors, or just really interested in art or history? If so, it would be great to go to a museum, art gallery, or cultural center together. Come back for the rest of the semester more educated and inspired than ever.
  9. Picnic Adventure: This one is pretty good for those who want to take cute pictures with their friends, or just enjoy nature. Pack some yummy food and head out to a nearby park or beach for a fun-filled day outside.
  10. Staycation: Lastly, for people who are typically too busy to go out, it might be really fun to take some time off of work and do all of the touristy things that they never had the time to do before. If their town is comically small and does not even have a Walmart, at least they can take a well-deserved nap.
