On Oct. 27, Tarleton State University’s chapter of the Sigma Alpha Pi leadership honor society hosted its annual senior citizen’s dance at the Stephenville Senior Center.

“This is a community service project where all the inductees get together and help serve the community,” said Juan Ortega, a member of SAP. “For the past three years the seniors there have loved having us there and always welcome us back.”

Community service projects like this are a central part of membership in SAP, according to Ortega.

“We strongly believe that every inductee and member of Sigma Alpha Pi benefits from community service because it’s a great opportunity to learn and interact with the community, grow personally and help us establish a name as a Tarleton student organization,” said Ortega in an email interview with JTAC News. “Students who participate in any kind of community service show a level of respect that reflects their dedication towards a specific goal. Sigma Alpha Pi encourages all of their members to become involved in the community to enable social interaction and teamwork, which is why it is a chapter requirement.”

Ortega said he believes it is important for students to make a habit of serving Stephenville during their time at Tarleton.

“Giving back to the community that does so much for Tarleton is essential in growing for both the citizens of the community and the students of the university,” said Ortega. “It is important to show appreciation towards the community support throughout our years here at Tarleton. Our appreciation does not stop there however, because even though we will graduate, we always be a part of the Tarleton family and Sigma Alpha Pi.”

Ortega also noted that the citizens of the Senior Center are deeply appreciative of their time every year.

“Students who volunteer for the Senior Center know how amazing and appreciative the seniors are of the time we give spend with them,” said Ortega. “The event is super fun because although some us may not know how to dance, the seniors will pitch right in and show you some of their best moves.”
