The Tarleton State University Food Pantry was officially opened on Aug. 7, and as of Oct. 17, the pantry has been able to assist 137 Tarleton students. They have been working diligently to promote the new food pantry and reach even more.

“The food pantry is shared initiative between Student Success & Multicultural Initiatives (SSMI) and the Division of Student Life. It is run by a committee of people from these areas who assist in the promotion,” said Dr. Lora Helvie-Mason, Director of the Office of Diversity & Inclusion. “So far, during the pilot phase, thousands of magnets were given out, a webpage launched, posters put up, and use of social media (hashtag used: #tarletonfoodpantry) along with partnerships with groups on campus and in the community. Additionally, there were press releases, several news stories (both at TSU and in the community newspaper), and conversations with many faculty, staff, and student organizations, including the SGA, to help inform the campus community about the food pantry.”

The pantry is still in its pilot phase, and the committees working to better the pantry will be helping it move through three additional phases once they examine the needs of the campus community. They will work to grow their strategic partnerships, connect the Food Pantry with ALE opportunities, continue to seek grants, and begin research regarding food insecurity.

“The food pantry is just getting started, so the goal is a sliding one. It is rewarding to see so many people making use of this service on campus. We hope to continue to assist the campus community and continue to uphold the Tarleton core value of Service,” said Dr Helvie-Mason, when asked if she felt the food pantry had completed its goal of assisting students in need.

If students would like to make a donation, the food pantry is always in need of shelf-stable food, especially proteins.

“Several great protein options include canned/pouch tuna or chicken or even peanut butter,” said an email from food pantry staff. “Remember donations have to be shelf-stable and ideal for life in the residence halls.”

Monetary donations can be made to Tarleton State University, noting “Food Pantry” in the memo, and mailed to: Tarleton State University – Office of Diversity & Inclusion, Box T-0490, Stephenville, Texas, 76402. Questions and concerns regarding the food pantry can be sent via email to [email protected].

The Tarleton Food Pantry is located in Thompson Student Center room 103-A and is open Monday through Friday from 1-6 p.m.
