Update (11-18-2014, 12:36 p.m.): The Gay-Straight Alliance Safe Sex Seminar has been rescheduled for next semester, according to Gardner.

According to the Guttmacher Institute, the standards for sexual education in schools vary widely from state to state. The general requirements for Texas are that it must be age appropriate, and parents must be able to have their kids opt out. The content is required to stress abstinence and waiting until marriage.  Condoms must be discussed, but other forms of contraception are not always covered.

In an effort to correct what is often perceived as misinformation, and to offer LGBTQIA (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Questioning, Intersex, and Asexual) inclusive sex education, the Tarleton Gay-Straight Alliance has invited the Health Education Learning Project to present on campus. HELP operates in Tarrant County and works to provide various programs for women’s health, HIV prevention, and LGBTQIA youth.

HELP will be set up in room 27 of the Thompson Student Center on Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Pizza will be provided. Members of the GSA will also have other information available as well as a variety of games and activities. An assortment of latex condoms and vaginal condoms will be made available for free.
