The project to change the “Alumni Island” into a pedestrian mall for Tarleton State University is still on schedule to be completed in May of 2015.

When completed, the site will have a water fountain, a plaza honoring John Tarleton, a landscaped green area with benches and several gathering places for students. There will also be more space for organizations to hold events, activities and gatherings. The site will also have Internet access.

“Given that tradition is one of the university’s core values, the area will remind students of the university’s founder, note important points of university history and preserve campus landmarks such as the 3 Penny Triangle,” said Harry Battson, Assistant Vice President of Marketing and Communications.

Turner Land Architecture from Amarillo is the lead architect for the project, while Alpha Building Corporation from San Antonio has been set as the general contractor. According to landscape architect Cleve Turner, the pedestrian mall will serve as the center of campus.

The first step in the construction process – new concrete pavement and brick paver inlays along with a grass area between the Mathematics and E.J. Howell Education Buildings – has been completed.

The Pedestrian Mall Project is being funded from permanent university funds within the Texas A&M University System.
