On Tuesday, April 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. there will be three cooking segments to help show people that cooking at home can be healthy, quick and easy. It will be held in the Barry B. Thompson Student Center ballroom at Tarleton State University.

The cost of the event is $20, and attendees are asked to bring nonperishable or canned foods for local food pantry donation. Current Tarleton students will receive a $5 discount if they register with their university email.

Each attendee receives a gift bag from The Home Place at Ace, a cookbook including recipes from the cooking segments, tickets in door-prize drawings and refreshments.

Retired extension agent Shirley Gerald and two other cooking experts will show how to prepare three main courses and six side dishes. Registered dietitians from Texas Health Resources will show how to make kale chips, polenta and other examples from Pinterest pins.  Also, “Not My Momma’s Kitchen Gadgets” challenge will be part of the fun.

Participants from last year’s cooking school said they learned how to reduce calorie or fat content with slight modifications, how to substitute ingredients to suit personal tastes and how to utilize slow-cookers to prepare more meals.

“I loved the quick tips on alternatives and cooking from presenters,” Donna White, Erath County Extension Agent and a past participant, said.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension, Texas Beef Council, Tarleton State University, Texas Health (Harris Methodist Hospital), Star Council and H.E.B. will sponsor the event.
